2008/09 Season @ Sittingbourne angling club

Well after a great season at Bax farm fisheries, I had decided to go and try the S.A.C lakes. These lakes were first dug back in the late 50’s and stocked in the early part of the 60’s. Back then there were only 3 lakes but in the last 15 years they had split the 3rd lake into 2. They are all stocked with carp, bream, tench and many more species.

Well in the closed season I spent as many days possible walking around the 4 lakes spotting fish and where they hold up etc.

Lake 1: this is the smallest lake there, it is stocked with all species and some carp too. This is classed as the Match Lake.
Lake 2: This is a lovely lake which is stocked with loads of carp from lower doubles to upper 20’s and the biggest carp that I know that has come out is 25lb+
Lake 3: This is the main carp lake and this holds the larger carp upto 39lb+ and this is the main carp lake, It only has a few swims dotted around. It is also the most beautiful one on the complex.
Lake 4: This is the unknown lake as not many anglers try and fish it, but there are rumours that it has carp from lower doubles to lower 30’s and a few in there upper 20’s.

That’s the basic info on this water so far..

19th June this is my first session of the season, I had decided to have a go on Lake 3. The weather was lovely with nice hot conditions with a slight wind just breaking the surface of the water. I set up in the 4th swim on the long bank. I had set a rod just on the edge of the reeds and the other rod I sent it out as far as I could towards the bar of the island.
I spent from 9.15 till 2.30 but the carp were not playing ball but they were crashing over the top of my baits. These were the lasts of my tuna and Scopex boilies. These are the boilies that had brought me all fish that I caught last season at Bax Farm.

But this time I had no luck.

Wednesday 26th June.
I was asked by my nephew if he could tag along as he has never been carp fishing before, So that morning we decided to have a go on Lake 1. We arrived at 9.30 and it looked perfect for a day fishing, so we had a look round a found a swim just by the car park. So we were set up by 10.15. With the lines out the first bits just came thick and fast but sadly the fish weren’t carp but all bream and tench. The fish liked these boilies they were 14mm crab and sweet fruit fished over a P.V.A bag filled with mixed pellet.
By midday we had enough of the bream and tench, so I decided on using the very last of the tuna and scopex these were 18mm so they should be better for the carp and we might be able to get the carp feeding.
Well this was the right move as by 1 o’clock my left-hand rod shot off. As I bent into the run I realised that it was a carp. I played the fish for the best part of 15 minutes while my nephew was waiting with the net. It was looking good and then all of a sudden the fish made a last attempt for the lilly pads. Well that was all she wrote (TINK) we parted company and the carp just took a slow swim back to where it felt safe.
Well that was time for us to pack up and make our way home.

My next session was the following Thursday 6th July. I set of to the lakes at 9am and arrived at the lakes by 9.20. When I got to the car park, it was full. So I decided to have a walk around first to see what swims are free. Well I had just got around by the dam wall (this is where the 3rd lake got split in the 80’s). When I saw at least 5 large carp, just drifting around the Long Island in Lake 3. But there was a big problem and that was the weed. I had a few casts but it just was a nightmare. I must think next time on getting some leadcore leader.
So I made my way back to the car park and then made my way around the tree line on the 4th Lake. This lake has fewer weed beds, but on the down side the swims are a lot smaller and there are a lot of overhanging trees what doesn’t help with casting. I found a swim that just screams carp so I went into the swim and set my rods up and started to fish, well this was another wrong move as the rest of the session went without a bite. I gave it until 2.30 but then it was time to go.

The following Monday I went back down to the lake, but this time I took my wife. We had a long walk around Lake 4 to find some more swims and see if we could spot some carp.
We were just in between 2 swims when there was a carp crashing in the next swim, when we got around to the swim there was nothing there but it looks a nice spot. Apart from the over grown weeds and reeds. This swim needs a whole lot of work but when it’s done it will be a great swim.
So we headed back to the first swim and I started to rake out the weed, within the hour the swim was clear of weed, so I put a few baits out to get the fish milling around. Then we headed back home.

Well by the Thursday I was gagging to get down to the lake and the baits that I had made on the Tuesday were ready to try (choc & mint). I got back from the school run and took the dog for his walk then I went a fast as I could to get the car loaded with all my gear.
I arrived in the swim at about 9.30, and the first thing was to get some bait out ready, when that was finished it was time to get the rods and rigs ready. By 10.30 the bites started and I had a good run but by the time I bent into it the line was slack, I found myself say it’s a tench. I carried on reeling in, and yes it was a tench but at least it’s a fish, on a closer look it was at least 7lb.
Well this went on most of the day in total I had 4 tench biggest around 7lb and 3 bream up to 6.5lb but still No Carp!
So I put some more bait out and started to pack away when my wife phoned and we agreed that I would come back in the morning….

So the following day I was back down there, when I got to the swim there was someone in there. So I went of to the last swim on this side of the lake called the point, well I spent 2 hrs clearing out all the weed as this was choc solid, I put some bait out and sat waiting. Well there was nothing going on so I spent the rest of the morning putting on my lead core on all my rods.
Well there was nothing happening at all there must be something wrong as I wasn’t even getting any line bites and the fish weren’t showing either. Was it the bait or was it the noise from raking out the weed. So I packed away my stuff and went home thinking of a plan for next week.

Well over the weekend I spent a few hours in the shed rolling some new bait. I rolled it up in a few different sizes; I was able to get 4kg of chicken tikka and mango. Well if these don’t catch I do not know what will, as these smell YUM!

Well by that Wednesday my wife was kicking me out to go fishing as I had been driving her mad for days. Well I don’t need telling twice, the car was loaded in record time and I was off, well the drive was a nightmare as I got stuck behind a tractor all the way to the lakes.
I arrived at 10am and I made my way to the point. The rods and bait were out in the prime spots by 10.30. And that is where they stayed as by 11am another angler on the opposite bank was just banging out a shed load of bait which in turn sent the fish flying out of the swim.
This sent me of, as this is my last session for a while due to the kids being on their summer holidays. So I went off home with my tail between my legs.

Well the kids holiday had just started when My grandfather passed away  boohoo a day after his 86th birthday, this was a big shock to me as well as my Nan. They had been married for 61 years and they both had brought me up since I was 11, so I was very close to him as he was more like a father. Now it was my job to get things sorted out as my father lives in Ireland and he doesn’t face death very well, so that was all I got done over the next few weeks...

Well after a few hard weeks it was time for the kids to back to school. YES! And now its time for me to get back to the Carp fishing. I need a few hours just so I can get my mind straight.

Well on the Wednesday I done the school run and the dog walking, and loaded the car up by 9.15. I arrived at the 4th lake to find it covered in super weed. So I set of around lake3 to make my way to lake 2, as I haven’t fished this one yet, but I was meet by the lake being covered in weed to.
So now I have to decide what lake to fish #1 or #3, well lake 1 was full and there were only a few swims on Lake 3 free. The only side of the lake that no one was fishing was the horse bank. There was a nice little swim there and it screams carp with a small island on your left and a long thin island to your far right, it also has a nice size of open water in front of the swim. This gives you the option on fishing close in or some long-range spots.
Well it wasn’t to be, as all I received were line bites one after another. Then a few minutes later the Bream set in. So I gave up and made my way home.

The next few sessions I spent in the two swims on the horse bank, but I still haven’t had any bites let alone any Carp….

So the next session I decided to battle against the weed on Lake 4. As I seemed to be getting a least some bites and the odd fish on this water. So I spent this session just walking around the other bank. I found some nice swims to choose from and there was more open water in between the weed on this side of the lake.
This side of the lake got a make over in the close season, as they had a digger in to remove some of the reeds and as much silt as they could. But there is still a lot of weed still growing there this season.
The swim I found is well out of the way and if you were not paying any attention when walking around you would miss it.
So over the next few days I spent clearing out the weed and some reeds, I also had some new bait, to try out. So I put out a 0.5kg went over a few spots and I just hope that the fish like it ..

Well it’s now the 2nd October and it back to the lake to see if all that work over the past week is going to pay off. I arrived in the swim by 10am, on my arrival I saw a few fish crashing over the weed banks. So I set a rod in the weed bank to my left and the other went in the channel in between the weed on my right.
Well the first bite came quite fast and I reeled in a 7” Rudd, It had taken a size 4 hook and an 16mm boilie, this came on the rod on the left. Soon after I had a run on the other rod, this turned out to be a 6lb tench. But at least it’s a fish and they like the bait. STILL NO CARP!!

9th October back to the lake and back to the swim. I put the rods out in the same spots as last time, but after 3 hrs I hadn’t received even a line bite or anything. So I put on a chicken tikka and mango boilie and put it out on the left-hand side weed bank.
This did work as within 30 minutes I received a cracker of a run but it was short lived as my hooklink snapped (AHHHHH). I know it was a carp this time as it had the classic banging of the head.
Well that was it for me it was time to set of home…

15th Oct I have had a busy week at home, from helping my Nan and I had a new carpet laid and now I’m decorating the hallway. And to top it off I have been made a parent governor at my boys school, what is a good thing as they need people to help run the place as it’s a small village school.
So when my wife said you need some time out so go fishing (WOW!! ) so with no time to spear I set off for the lake. Well I got set up like a rocket in the swim and put the rigs in the same spot as last time. The right hand rod had the CT&M in 18mm and I had a pva bag filled with pellets and broken boilies. I also had a similar set up on the other rod but with a 16mm crab & sweet plum boilie.
Within the first hour I had received untold line bites on the left-hand rod but nothing on the right hand one.
By 12 I had moved the left-hand rod away from the weed bank and put it into open water, and I also had rebaited the other rod and put a few more free-bees out with it. Within 30 minutes I had received a screamer from the right hand rod, and it’s a carp !! the fish must have been on steroids as it took me all around the swim and I was trying very hard to keep it on as it is my first carp that I have been able to play properly. I was just getting the net in place when all of a sudden the fish made a run for a small patch of weed and had to put quite a lot of pressure on the fish to turn it. I was able to do it just in the nick of time, but I still haven’t seen it and I still don’t know how big it is as it still hanging close to the lake bed when all of a sudden the rig came flying out (AHH ****)
This really done my head in, as this fish was mine but once again it was not to be. So I put the kettle on to have a nice cuppa. I had just sat down and my head started to thump, this went on and just got worse. It was so bad it took me forever to try and put the gear away, as everytime I bent over it felt like I was going to pass out.
Well it took me well over 1hr 45 min to get packed away and back home, as soon as I got indoors I took a few tablets and within a few hours I was felling better. Now I’m thinking of that carp was it a common/mirror or leather, I will never know.

So I am now working on this write up for the forum, I am a bit disappointed with how this season is going, as the carping is hard work on this new water, and I’m thinking of extending the length of the sessions. I just don’t know what to do But I’m loving it really.

To date I haven’t landed a carp but I have had some nice bream up to 9lb and tench to 8.5lb and lots of them.

I hope that the next few months will be better and I will keep you all up to date.

Tight lines to all
Hope you enjoyed it so far

 Thanks N.W,

I am trying very hard on getting back out there. As I am getting jittery now but just to top it off, we are starting to get the cold snap, with overnight frost. but that will not stop me as I like the cold, just hope the carp don't mind it.

Thursday 8th..

Well I arrived at the lake late this morning, it was 10.15 by the time I got set up in the swim.

My first job was to feed the swim, so I spoded a few pellets out and put a scattering of boilies. So that was done now it was time to sort the bivvy out, by the time I got that done there were bubbles all over the bait. So out went the rigs.
Time for tea !!

well the bubbles had stopped    so I decided to catapult out some more boilies on another part of the swim. Well it was going okay until the catty broke, Mwraahaha  the metal arm snaped and came back and smacked my nuckel (ahhhhhhh   ) So i went and sat down to see what damage I had done, Well it doesn't look good but sod it I will carry on.
BIG BIG Mistake as I received a screamer from the bubble area well I bent into it and tried to reel it in and that is when I realised that I have done some damage to my hand. Well as you can emagine I wasn't very happy as this was a good carp, But i was glad when it droped the hook.

Well I decided to pack up and get myself home  boohoo

By the time I got home and pick up the kids from school my hand was killing me   . So I went to the hospital, they gave my hand an x-ray just to find out what was going on.

Nurse " well Mr Gates " she said " you have badly brussed the bone and a possable hair line fracure " SO !! No Fishing for a fortnight  boohoo SHE MUST BE MAD a whole fortnight ,well thats not on......

So now I must rest and see if I can get it better for the next Session ( next week !! HA)

Tight lines to all
