rammed......
well the weekend`s excursion started on thursday. after a tip of about a local water that me and luke had never herd of, directions and as much info as we could was obtained out of our source. in the car and speeding to our destination not knowing what to expect. the lake was very easy to find once you new where it was that is. we arrived in the middle of no where and a stunning little pool with some very special carp greeted us. a quick walk round and we decide we must fish as soon as posiable....
saturday night was the planed night...... that will give us enough time to sort out the bait and a proper plan. our source told us that we would have to be there early as it is popular with some of the local`s and on weekend`s it`s a bit of a choir to get a swim as the lake is only small. this is the bit of info we wish we had listened to. saturday afternoon and we arrive to find the lake rammed with angler`s of all kind`s. luke`s hart sunk as he was so looking forward to fishing it for the first time. i on the other hand have been in this situation so many time`s before and i suggested we do a mid weeker when there will be no one here.
so it`s off to another water to have a look. rammed as well. so off we go again to our next location as we pull in the car park we know we have no chance as there`s already more car`s than swim`s. luke`s enthusiasm is gone and his fishing head is right out of the window. but I'm not willing to give up just yet, a quick phone call home to NW and i ask if she can phone andy at ******** fishery and explain what has happen, and see if we can fish the night. (this is a no night fishing water but the owner andy has a big hart. cheer`s fella) NW rings me back and tell`s me that andy said to come on out and he will let us fish..... RESULT...... luke has not fished here before so i fill him in on the lake as we make are way there. there`s a few 20`s to go at i tell him, but most of the carp are low double`s and high single`s so we should be able to put a few on the bank.
this is another small lake well it`s two really but there joined by a channel and the carp can be in ether lake at any time so it can be a bit hit or miss. the first lake you come to as you arrive is the one we will be fishing as the other is for the residence staying in the lodge`s. as we pull up to the lake we can see there`s three on already, two carper`s and a pole angler. but it`s fine as they want be fishing the night and the swim i had planed on us fishing was free. the two carper have been there since 6am and have had nothing not so much as a bleep. luke look`s a little concerned but i tell him not to worry as its a day water and like most it switches on when it get`s dark and the carp feel safer.
set up and ready to go.....
as i thought the daylight passed with me and luke bagging one each before night fall. they were only small fish so were slipped back without pic`s or weighing. the two other carper`s packed away there gear and come over for a chat before they left. neither of them had caught today and would be back in a week to have another crack at um, i drooped in to the conversation about a great forum by the name of carp addict that would love a couple of new member`s. then they wished us luck and said there good bye`s. now we had the place to are self`s so it was time to spread the rod`s out a little, and get some bait in on the spot`s.
as we sat and chatted about the lake and the fish luke asked if there were any EEL`S in the lake, i don't know was my answer, but there only one way to find out.......an eel rod was set up while luke done a bit of swishing for bait. rod sorted and luke`s got a big smile on his face as he rounds the bend on the bank, this all i need to see to know he has me some bait. I'm not putting it out till it`s proper dark i tell him as there`s also allot of pike in here. so we sat and chatted some more as we watched the sun go down.
night time fall`s and it`s very quite on the carp front so the eel rod is flicked in to the margin and it`s time to get in the bag and see what the night bring`s. 11pm and the eel rod is away, out of me bag in disbelief and I'm holding the rod witch by now has a rather nice bend in it ....COME ON.....three attempts and it`s in the net. luke is called to help with some pic`s and the weighing......3lb 8oz is read out to me, that will do i think as the flash from the camera destroys me night vision.
rod back out and it`s not long before I'm in again with another eel, but only a small one this time.
fresh bait on and it`s swung back out in to the margin`s. back in me bag and just getting comfy when one of me delks tell`s me i have a very angry carp on the other end. this one`s played like a pro as she kite`s threw two of my other line`s GREAT just what i need. the sound of me other delk`s trying to sing in tune wake`s up luke just as i slip her in the net. on the mat and she`s not as big as i first thought. at 11lb on the nose it was time for a pic and to let her go.
that was the biggest of the night but i did manage another double and a mid single. we packed up in the morning with four carp a piece and four eel`s for me.
another big thanks to andy for letting us fish...see you soon fella... _________________ under 18? Get in THE ZONE

back on the canal.......
it`s thursday evening and luke`s popped round for a cupper and to see if i fancy doing friday night on the canal, without thinking i say yes mate why not. i didn't even realize i had agreed to fishing until he started talking tactic`s and where i thought are best chance of a carp would be. my head was berried in the pc scanning virtual earth looking for water`s around are area. bingo.... have a look at this mate, that`s fairly close to your house mate. want to have a look.
road direction`s are stored in my head as we make are way to this un seen lake, not knowing what we would find. it looked a good size on the pc but time will tell as we still need to find it and that was proving to be a bit of a problem, eventually we find the track we are looking for and a brisk walk across a couple of fields and we catch are first glim`s of the water threw the tree`s, the vegetation was so high as we made are way to the edge of the lake. it looked like man had never stepped foot on the bank`s as we found our self`s by the water`s edge. we are speechless at this point and i can honestly say the beauty of this place stooped me in my track`s as ruffly six acer`s of stunning water stretched out in front of me.
we stood for a while just watching and wondering and hoping that it may contain carp, the next step for us is to find the owner and see if it was ever stocked with fish. the next time I'm there i will take some pic`s of this truly wild water. back at the car and it`s hard to get this place out of my mind as i make plan`s to catch fish that might not even be there. why do we do this to our self`s.
getting back to reality was hard work. but by now i was gaging to wet a line, and talk slowly turned back to the canal and it`s resident carp. fishing head well and truly on as we talked area`s and swim`s. there wasn't much to talk about really as we both agreed that the basin would give us as good a chance as any. and with two carp under my belt from this area already this year the game was well and truly on.
just after 7pm friday evening we are lugging the gear to our swim`s the rain that had been threatening all day had finally arrived and the brolly was the first thing to be set up. setting up the rest of the gear whilst dodging the shower`s was great fun but i did get caught out once or twice. a slightly damp luke arrived in my swim asking what i thought are chance`s were. my reply was the same one i alway`s give him....if were on um we will catch um...if were not we wont...simple as.
carp rod`s out and it`s time to get the eel rod out. that soon set up and some bait in the shape of some small roach are swished from the margin`s. every thing sorted and it`s time for a fag and a john smith`s. with the wind picking up and the shower`s becoming more frequent i felt quit snug and cozy under the stealth as i looked out and watched the weather gradually turning in to a mini storm. i must of drifted off to sleep at this point as the next thing i know it`s 11pm and me eel rod is away out of the bag and bent in to an eel in a flash, the rain is driving in to my face as the first fish of the night is hauled in to the waiting net. on the scale`s 1lb 4oz not big but worth the effort. rod back out and i need a towel. shortly afterward luke`s in... another eel.... one a piece.
back under me brolly and i notice the wind has changed direction and the rain is now trying it`s hardest to soak all my gear. a little adjustment on me Storm pole`s and the front of the brolly is lowered a couple of foot.....sorted.... i soon drop back off to sleep. 3am and the eel rod is off again, this little wriggler is soon unhooked and slipped back. it`s finally stooped raining but i don't know how long that will last. boot`s off and it`s back to the warmth of me sleeping bag. 6am and a very excited luke is telling me he has his very first canal carp in his net, boot`s on and camera in hand, what a cracker 18lb 9oz common caught on one of my home made tiger and maple boilie`s...i don't need to tell you how over whelmed luke was with this fish, he has worked hard for it and endured many blank`s on the canal. well done mate. picture taken and she`s released back in to the murky water.
7am and me right hand rod signal`s a couple of bleep`s, eye`s fixed on the tip of the rod and a slow pull down tell`s me that something is on the other end. rod in hand and a very lively fish is doing all it can to shed the hook. luke is with me by now and is waiting with the net, on the surface and in the net first time....it`s another carp, and at 5lb 10oz it`s the smallest one Ive had from here, but size does not matter it`s a canal carp after all.
8.20am and luke`s in to another carp what`s going on, I'm still getting over the shock that we have had one each already and now luke`s in to another. on the mat and a very pretty fully scaled is unhooked and slipped in to the sling. the needle stop`s at 12lb 4oz .....result.....
it`s now 9am and luke`s buzzing, all them blank`s and now two in the same session...unreal... as we sit and chat and try and get our head`s around what has happened my middle rod signal`s a couple of bleep`s and a steady run developes.....fish on......this feel`s like a carp surely it cant be another. but it is and it`s in the net in no time. on the scale`s and a very lean common goes 13lb 12oz. it doesn't get any better than that, the carp had defiantly read the script and had followed it to the letter.
well done again to luke on his first canal carp.
