PixelsIs higher the pixels, better the photo?

Basically yes the more pixiels the larger the print you can obtain with out the picture looking like it's but together with lego!!!

Thanks mark, but where do you think the line is, where do you think the number of megapixels is more than enough?
I guess most of us who turn our photos into prints, only go 5” x 7” ?
I’d be happy with 8 or a 10 megapixel it cannot be worth going higher than that for value for money?
What about the rest of you, any thoughts

This was taken with a 3.3 megapixel digi camera...
And this was taken with a 5 megapixel cameraphone (Nokia N95)
As you can see, IMO the 3.3 MP photo is sharper and does not pixelate as much when blown up. So, I've found that the higher MP does not equal better pics. It has to be said though, the second pic was taken with a phone, not a purpose made camera, but still...

I think to compair ......the difference ...you would need to do shots of the same subject at the same time , so you can compair Like for Like

I'll do that later today and post up pics

You right what you saying Ron in comparing the two, but just looking at that top photo “pva” what more do we want if that’s what a 3.3 meg, can offer?

i heard somthing about some cameras are advertised as 10mp for example, and they do have that, but they are only able to utilise a certain amount, so basically its just for advertising,...
some guy who is a photography nerd lol, was speaking to me and it made no sense haha
any ideas

I cannot see that myself Rich mate, advertising laws are quite strict today.
There will be a little allowance cos all cameras will not be smack on.
You can reduce the photo size and quality in the settings to give you more room on your memory card, he may have talking about that?

Here you go... compare away
The camera picture....
The phone picture...
For one thing, the colours are a lot more vivid on the camera pic, they seem wuite washed out from the phone, on what was a very sunny day.

look at the detail like leaves on the water you can see it a lot better on camera, not the phone,

You going to see a difference in the two photos cos of the different settings.
imo the cam photo with only 3.3 mp is much sharper.
Imho I don’t think you going to see a big difference in quality, unless you want to blow your photos up in size ?

Agreed!!!

Great work PVA
And the top shot is much better to my eye's
But there are a few questions ...I would ask myself ??
Is a camera and a phone Like for Like ??
Do I get more hand shake on the phone as its smaller to hold ??
What are the settings on each of them ??
I must admit ...I have just upgraded to a 10 millon pix camera fron a 6 milion one .....and I can see a difference in the quality of the shots
is it posible for you to get your hands on a bigger pix camera ?? set them both up on a trypod ( so no camera shake ) then see what results you get ?? this would be more like for like

Ive read that lens quality is the most important factor, and that 8m ppixels is the optimum amount to produce the best shots.. this is from another forum from people who seem to really know their stuff.

Ermmm, as I was holding the camera and the phone at the same time I imagine the hand shake would be relatively similar, holding with one hand each, one on top of t'other, and I pressed the shutter button at the same time
I shall do that, with my 3.3 and a 7.2 MP camera.... Panasonic Lumix TZ3
Give me a minute... It won't be a very inspring shot, it's in my garden...

Mark I am a camera numpty buddy, but I was once told that pixel size is only relevant to the actual picture your taking, as most printers can only produce quality(optimum) reproductions at around 6 million pix. Obviously professional printers would(I guess?) be different.
Is this info correct????????????
kind regards Jeff

Here you go, 7.2 MP first...
Now the 3.3 MP...
The 3.3 is more of a bridge camera, between point'n'click and SLR, and the 7.2 is a point'n'shoot, so looks as if it was zoomed out less, but I assure you, they were on the same tripod, same place, but the 3.3 has a larger lens
Make your own mind up...

apart from being able to enlarge the photographs, cameras with better resolution will produce more pleasing photos. because of increase in pixels all textures will be more detailed and have more depth.
also the colour reproduction should be more accurate??
(i guess this is neglagible when you take into account the difference between cameras)
