to be honest your better off just putting the effort in and getting the best photograph possible. with the knowledge you'll be fine. i reccomend using film anyway!

There is so much you can do with it ....I cant Fault it

It's a hard one this as there is soooo much to learn i can talk you though some but to be fair the best way to learn is get yourself on a photoshop workshop!!!
For croping images it's safer to open a new file and size it to what you would like eg 8 x 10 then open the image and drag it onto the new file select the move tool and drag over onto the new file.
Once the image is onto the new file you can close the original.
Now if you hit Ctrl & T on the key board you will get the free transform tool by holding down the shift button and draging the corners you can recompose your shot perfectly!!
Holding the shift key keeps the image the same without distorting!!
Once you have the image composed all you have to do is ether double click the mouse or click the green tick normally on the top task bar!!!
Job done!

P.S the reason i crop the picture via what i mentioned above:
If you was to just "crop" the picture when it comes to printing there will be no way of fitting the image onto standard sized paper eg 6 x 4, 8 x 10 etc.

hitting F makes you go in and out of screens modes
B = Brush
I = Colour Picker
P = Pen tool
The "[" "]" keys make your brushes bigger or smaller
Ctrl + "-" or "+" Will zoom in and out
Ctrl + 0 zooms out to 100%
Ctrl + J = Duplicates layer
Ctrl + U = Adjust Hues and Saturation
Ctrl + M = Adjust Curves
Ctrl + F = Redo Filter e.g. blur
Ctrl + Z = Undo
If your in full screen modes were you have a gray backing on your main image (Press f once) then you can hold shift with the paint bucket tool and simple fill you background
Burn and dodge tool are best used very low strength
--------------
A few nice tips there
If you go to Image>Mode>Lab Colours then hit Ctrl + M then you can edit different colours and make everything look more crisp
Filter>Sharpen>Unsharpen Mask This is a very good filter which can make everything alot clearer

Nice one Crafty good on ya for putting the effort in
If you are dodgeing and burning i would recomend no greater that 4% any higher your in risk of burning out the picture!
