Markerfloats jolly to Yatelys South Lake

I was fortunate enough to attend the annual Stoney and Friends Yateley fish-in.
I was asked to steward the South Lake and as l had fished there before was more than willing to accept. So Friday morning arrives and i thought i would get down to the lake early as the event didnt begin until 10.30am. Car fully loaded i pull through the gates at 9am to find all 17 of my fellow anglers having a good old chinwag.
Now being a steward had one major perk LOL i got the choice of swims in the car park, so i opted for the right hand number 2 swim.
10am arrives and all the other guys wander off around the lake and decided amongst themselves which swim they wanted. I fully expected world war 3 to break out when the all got back over who wants what swim etc but fair play the returned and all said 'sorted Matt' and trundled off with their gear.
Given the hot temperature that day all 3 of my rods were out on zigs, two with yellow foam and the 3rd with black as all the fish were cruising the upper layers basking in the glorious sunlight. Can carp get a suntan?
Afternoon turned to evening and still no signs of the fish getting their heads down so i brought 2 of my rods in and changed to bottom baits and cast both to the far margins. The 3rd on stayed out as a zig as the skies were clear and black foam on a zig at night works a treat
It was just a case of kettle on and sit and wait now as surley once the light had faded they would start to munch.
Saturday arrived without a bleep in the night. l was woken by my middle rod at 5am but lost her to a hook pull. I rebaited and cast back to the exact spot give or take a foot or so but it stayed quiet until mid morning when the same rod was off again. This time i had all 3 rods locked up and after some fun and games and a tour of the bay the carp (mirror) was netted and weighed at 18lb 4oz

Rig back out to the same spot again and within 10 minutes the other rod to the margin was off, they were definately feeding today. Assisted by head baliff Steve another South Lake mirror was netted and weighed at 21lb 4oz

By this time all 3 rods were now on bottom baits and the results were showing as by this time i had lost 3 fish to hook pulls, one of which snapped the hook at the point where it starts its curve, needless to say this is on its way back to the manufacturer for hopefully some answers.

The rest of saturday was quietish with only one more netted. This little fella was a stunner and the first of 3 South lake commons to grace my bank. She weighed in at 16lb 10oz

A good nights sleep was had saturday night and Sunday morning brought further optimism that we hadnt finished yet and sure enough 9am saw a lovely 21lb 8oz common smile for the camera.

Time was ticking on now as we had to be off the lake by 3.30pm..still time though for one last run and sure enough the left hand margin rod was off again and my biggest of the weekend was banked at 22lb 12oz

So it was 5 landed but in the ended the total i lost stood at 7. How frustrating is a hook pull?

So all in all a great weekends fishing was had. Any of you that have never fished the South Lake the results are there for all to see. Its a lovely lake with baliffs that go out of their way to help you, they arent just there to check your ticket.

See you all on the bank

Matt

Following on from my thread regarding a fishing companion, we made the 2 hour trip down to a rescue centre in Kent last monday and came home with another addition to our familly, Charlie

I fished this weekend Friday till Sunday and Charlie came with me to Yateley South Lake. The freedom he had was great after being stuck in kennels for god knows how long and in no time he was eating every tree in sight.
I have also found i have no need for bite alarms anymore as Charlie kept a watchful eye on my rods deep into the night

After his first night of guarding the rods, what better way to relax than to comandeer my bedchair for a well earned snooze

Come the crack of dawn and like a true carpy dog he lay there watching the water

What a great first session we both had.
it took me an hour to pack all my kit away and a further 2 hours to tidy up all the chewed up branches and sticks, but we are both looking forward to the next jolly down the lake.
Oh and by the way, we blanked lol
NOSEY WIFE

December 27th 2007, feeling like l had been dragged through a hedge backward as they say, l have a cough i just cant shift. Still, l have 6 days of fishing ahead and get dropped off at Yateleys South Lake at 10am and wave goodbye to the familly who are heading 200 miles north to spend new Year in Leeds with the wifes familly. No cars in the car park is an excellent sign, as is no anglers on the bank after a quick walkround. I say quick because l have got the know the lake quite well during the last few months, having fished it virtually every weekend since July. I decided after no deliberation whatsoever that swim one will be my home for the next 6 days and 5 nights. Why swim one? there are a couple of spots there that if you can hit them the fish tend to feed all year round. Luckilly for me i managed to hit them hence why l am updating my blog.
Thursday and Friday nothing to show on the bank except broken branches from the trees behind me. The wind certainly got up during both nights but my JRC bivvy managed to withstand it. Out of the blue on Thursday night l got a text from Jim, who was fishing the car park lake to say Alan, who was fishing behind him on the Split Lake,  had landed a 28lb beauty. Rods in, bivvy zipped off, text sent asking for the kettle to be put on, i made my way round to the guys for a few well dones and a fair bit of mickey taking. After an hour or so, i trudged back along the main road, head down against the wind and back through the gate of the South Lake. Thursday passes into Friday, which with these short daylight hours passes into Saturday morning and a beautiful clear blue sky and sun covering the whole lake. This is more like it, maybe the fish will spur into life l thought, but somehow deep down told myself they wouldnt, as the water temperature was very cold. However, i was to be proven wrong and at 11am the right hand rod had a drop back and a single beep. Do l hit it? Do l leave it? No coots over the bait, good sign, must be a fish, hit it then, no leave it a few more seconds. whilst the two people inside my head continued to agrgue l struck into it. the result?
A 22lb Leather

In the next 4 hours that followed i was in the right place at the right time with fish of 19lb (common) 12lb 2oz (mirror) and 12lb 4oz (common).
feeding frenzy over with, nothing else came out that day so the rest of the day and night was spent firmly engrossed in The Syndicate Part 1, a cracking read for those that havent read it. Sunday arrives and again the lake is covered in a warm glow, the sun beating down as if it were a summers day. Would l be as lucky today as yesterday? my head said yes course you will, my heart said dont be silly yesterday was a fluke a one off, its winter for gods sake man, fish dont eat in winter, they lay idle. WRONG AGAIN.... 09.20am off goes the right hand rod again, resuly an 18lb Mirror, followed 20 minutes later on the same rod by a 23lb common in pristine condition. I seemed to be having one of those days where if i had stood in the preverbial i would have come out smelling of roses. Two stunning fish in the space of 20 minutes, there is a god after all. Proof that there is came 30 minutes later when again, same rod, the right, ripped off. By now a few people on the lake had popped over to call me a few choice names, none of which are printable i may add. With a little help from one of the lakes baliffs my net was slipped under this little beauty, a 32lb 8oz Mirror and my personal best. Happy days

Back she went and it was coffees all round (south lake has an alcohol ban). Three more of the lakes residents were to grace my mat before the light faded. Commons of 18lb 12oz and 19lb 12oz and a Mirror of 20lb on the nose.
New Years Eve was here, was that 20lb Mirror to be my last 2007 carp? No it wasnt as at 09.30 on New years Eve morning i slipped the net under a 16lb Common, what a way to end the year, 11 carp and a new pb. It didnt end there. My thoughts now turned to packing all my gear away and cadging a lift home. Sitting on my chair, cuppa in hand, off goes the left rod. Not being one to refuse a bite, i struck into a lovely golden common of 23lb 12oz

Well l hope you enjoyed the read as much as l did the catching. Happy New Year

Matt
