leads for chod rig

what size leads do you use for the chod rig i was told to use the lightest you can get away with do you agree
nick_dunn

3oz maximum for me, only time i use 3's are when  ineed to be hitting the distance.
robvford

why light leads on a chod?
richchappy

would you like you face smacked repeatedly with a 5 oz lead???
Cambs Carper

You have a point rich but thats not the main reason for light leads. Light leads are used so that they cant use the lead to shake the hook out so theres minimum resistance everywhere use the rig with a slack line and light lead then when they take the bait theres no tightness that the fish can use to aid its riddence of the hook.

So how is the hook set then Steve?     Baffles the life out of me this light lead stuff

kind regards Jeff

We 'set' the hook  when we lift into the fish, i think the theory is that once they take the little stiff link into there gob they struggle to get rid of it due to its stiffness they shake there head and it wont comeout in thoery because theres no resistance any where to aid it, then it panicks and bolts.   Thats the theory anyway,  but one of my mates uses 8oz leads with the chod on fen drayton and he's had three fish out of there this year so who knows which is the best way to go with that rig some say light some say heavy

to be honest, i dont think there's a difference between a 5oz lead and a 2oz lead hanging from the rig. its still going to be around the carps face.
rav

how about just tieing the lead on with 4lb line so it falls off. problem solved

I thought about that 'drop off'style thingy the other day, basically my thinking is.  For a helicopter rig to be safe the rig needs to be able to come off the leadcore yes?  right so if the lead drops off the rig will struggle to come off the leadcore ie pulling the beads up the core, as usual my explanation sounds weird but think about it and you should see what i mean, i dont set my chods up drop off style because of that reason.  I simply glue the BOTTOM bead about 8-10inches above the lead so that the rig is no where near the lead, never glue the TOP bead!

well said.

so what do you define as 'safe'.
inline rigs, you may loose the lead on a breakoff, fish still trails line and rig
lead clip setup, you ditch the lead, fish still trails line and rig

same as anything else really.

and, tbh, i dont make my rigs for 'in event of breakoff', i plan on getting them in each and every time. and if droping the lead will help this, then it will be gone without second thought.
Cambs Carper

Heli's set up properly are safe. leadclips, runningrigs and inlines are safe IF used with tubing trailing a length of mono is not going to do much trailing a length of leadcore is going to catch up just due to the nature of leadcore.  Anything with the rig DIRECTLY attached to leadcore can be a potentially dangerous rig.

Another thing i do is because i use running rigs with leadcore is use a hooklink of lighter breaking strain than my mainline so then that will go first, and i use braid so the chance of a crack off with bullet braid is virtually nill. Personally i think the lead dropping off makes hardly a smither of difference but thats just my opinion and i think im quite alone on that thought.

Ps- I too rarely make my rigs up with 'absolute safety' in mind i have just started thinking about this after releasing several tethered fish.
rav

a fish trailing line is the same as one trailing leadcore. same [censored] just different diameter. makes no differentce at all in my eyes.
Cambs Carper

That really isnt true at all mate, im not going to argue about it but it isnt true.  Leadcore is heavier than mono, and when you bend a piece of leadcore what happens it stays in the same place it keeps its shape, it gets tangled up in snags very easy. Mono has virtually any weight and doesnt keep its shape at all.  Ive untethered three fish this year that are trailing lengths of leadcore so my opinion on the subject wont be changed, i know i sahre the same views and well known capr angler keith moors who owns and runs a fishery in france (bit of name droppin there )
carpcruncher

theres no hard and fast rule to the weight of the lead for a choddie imho.

3oz diffrenece!!!!  all that extra weight pulling ur rig into the chod unless you have ur rig flying of course.
