English water assaultWell where do i start?
Last year after flitting around on different waters i thought it was about time that i concentrated my effort on one water, i wont name it as its busy enough as it is, but its in the cotswolds.
The pressure this water receives is incredible on a daily basis, but hey you got to be in it to win it right? Also it was the fact that this water holds some of the best looking carp i have ever seen, size was not important but one of the biggy's would be good.
So my campain would start with a 5 day session, this would give me enough time on the bank to get used to the hustle and bustle of this busy water, well to cut a long story short, i caught 7 carp my first was even a 20lber
From that session onwards i was hooked, the lake was stunning and so were the carp
I did think that i went over the top with the camo, but hey thats fishing for you, i think we are slightly mad anyway
So the sessions went on and the carp kept rolling in, the local were saying to me that the bubble was bound to burst as nobody was doing as well as i was, but i put it down to the fact that i was probably using slightly diferent rigs etc to them, so i wasnt stuck in a rut as you can be when you fish a water for a while.
This water was a bit different to other waters i had fished before, so my approach had to change dramatically to stay ahead of Mr Carp.
As this was a clear water as opposed to the coloured types of waters that im used to, so i felt that blending in my end tackle was paramont, so clear leaders, hooklengths that were the same colour as the lake bed, as well as pinning everything down, so not to spook them before they have even had a chance to sample my hook bait.
As i said size didnt matter but this lake did hold a few 30's and 2 40's so the prizes were there to be caught!!
So a year down the line on the water, my results have still been good, but i think its down to the way i fish it, im not sticking to the same old methods, im willing to change and i do.
But i dont just change for the sake of it, it has to have a little bit of thought put behind it, for instance, one session i was fishing bottom baits which i do for 95% of my fishing, but i had a few takes and they were coming off, so this got the old grey matter thing maybe it the way they were feeding? So i put a chod rig on and a light scattering of boilies to make them work for their grub and it worked next three runs all met my net, what im trying to say is sometimes its worth changing to get results but dont do it just for the sake of it.
Have i caught any of the biggy's yet?? No but time will tell, but the biggest i have had so far is a 29lb 14oz common, so close but so far away, but thats fishing for you.
I have met some really nice anglers whilst fishing there, which is always a bonus when you fish a new water, broadens your horizons.
It was a bit of a secret squirel water when first walked on its banks, but with justification as they didnt want to give away too much, so i had to find out fo myself which to be honest helped me, as i wasnt just copying what they were doing.
As you can see from the pictures they are some of the best lookers out there.
My quest has not finished there though, as i have a few fish that are on my wanted list, like a big linear with my name written all over it
Here are a few more that i have caught so far, will let you know if any of the bigger one ever grace my unhooking mat, watch this space
Thanks for reading

Well i did my first assault on "the English Water", strange thing is usually it is quite weedy even at this time of the year, but all i could find was silk weed and random patches at that, not that im a great fan of this type of weed.
Anyway i was there for 5 days so first things first, i took a tour of the lake in anticipation of catching sight of a few of the residents, but to no avail, so to go with gut instinct and see what happened.
I opted for a swim called "the sticks" which is central swim so i could keep my eyes open for movement, anyway whilst setting up i saw a few head and shouldered right over where i was going to place my traps, so my confidence was now sky high, 24 hours later nothing not even a twitch and to make it worse not even a sign of carp in the swim, time for a change of swim, i decided to mave to a double swim where there was a deep channel running throught thinking that this was where they were, as we had a bit of a frost the night before.
24 hours still nothing, at this time i was feeling a bit dispondent, until i had a call from one of the lads at the other end of the lake, to say that there was quite a few jumping down that end, plus he had a few runs that morning, nothing big but he was pleased, so i loaded the barrow again and pushed my gear round to the gravels by the car park.
Another 24 hours passes still nothing but the carp are showing all around me, after plenty of head scratching, i decided to change my rigs to choddies to see if i could nick a bite, out flew the rigs and over the top i put a hand full of boilies (bloody seagulls had a feed as well), that afternoon i had a screaming run which turned out to be a 21lb 6oz common, happy days off the mark, as the evening came and the sun was just going down on the last night, i had a one toner on the right hand rod, i struck and what ever was on the end decided it didnt like to be hooked, after plenty of tooing and froing and made a sudden dash for freedom in the reed bed to my right, now this felt like a lump now as i could do nothing to stop it, eventually i freed it from the reeds after plenty of heave hooing, but the dreaded happened it came off!!! was i gutted? damn right i was
The following morning the sun came out and i started to pack my gear away, everything was loaded when i noticed a few carp further down the bank munching away without a care in the world, so i broke up some boilies and put some in the margins after they had gone, so i could keep an eye on it i climbed up a tree to get a better view and true to form, they came back and started troughing, there was some right lumps in there, one i recognised as a mid thirty common, i crept off and grabbed a rod from the car and slowly lowered my rig into place when the coast was clear, within minutes the rod roared of but it turned out to be one of the stockies.
Cant wait for the next session now in a couple of weeks, for another 5 days, fingers crossed
Here's a pic of the common, hopefully the first of many
